What I Wish I Knew Before I Got a Library Card

A library card opens up a whole new world of opportunities! Once you realize everything the library has to offer, it's hard to remember what it was like not to have one! September is Library Card Sign Up Month, and we hope you'll share this post and encourage others to get their library card, too! Don't forget to stop by the 2nd floor Reference Desk to pick up your Library Card Bingo Card, so you can participate in various library activities and win prizes!

Here are a few things one of our librarians wishes she knew before she got her library card!

Keep those papers they give you when you sign up!

I didn't know what I didn't know - there's so much at the library! When you sign up for a library card, you'll get a packet of information about how you can use your new card. I don't think I was prepared for all of the resources beyond books, and it can be overwhelming when you're learning about everything all at once. Keep your packet to refer back to. You'll be surprised at what you can do!

Late fees are okay!

I used to be terrified of getting late fees. I knew I would forget about a due date, or not be able to finish my book on time. I thought my name would go on a list of other shamed patrons. Now that I work in a library, I can say with confidence that I cannot name one person who has never had a late fee! Everyone at the library is happy that the materials are being used, and I know I'm never judged if a book finds its way back a little late. (Learn more about our loan periods, holds, and late fees at this link.)

The library is a great place to spend time!

One of my favorite things to do, even on my days off, is spend time in a library. I had no idea that libraries were so comfortable, even if you're not reading! I can use our computers to watch a movie, play scrabble on our huge scrabble board, do a puzzle, or catch up with the newspaper. The library also has regular events like movie matinees, book clubs, presenters, and trivia nights!

I don't need to buy a printer!

I've only used mine at home twice... I could have just gone to the library! We have several computers upstairs on the 2nd floor for you to browse the internet, use Microsoft Office products, access your email account, and more. Printing is available for a nominal fee, as well as copying (same fees as printing) and scan to email (free!). Learn more about our computers and printing services at this link.

I should have gotten one sooner!

Getting a library card only takes a couple of minutes, and all you need is a current ID and proof of address. What are you waiting for? A whole new world awaits! Learn more about how to get a library card at this link.
